The UK and US have forged a landmark bilateral deal that will ensure zero tariffs on UK medicine products entering the American market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to boost expenditure on drugs through the NHS. This commitment guarantees that import taxes on these key products will remain at nothing for a period of three years.

This development is in response to recent warnings to dramatically increase import taxes on patented drug imports, with potential rates discussed as high as 100%.

"This agreement with the United Kingdom reinforces the worldwide climate for new treatments and introduces long-overdue balance to transatlantic medicine commerce," a release noted.

Commercial Importance

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the UK's largest exports to the US, which is by far the largest destination for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Statistics reveal that in the one-year period to the end of September, the UK sold pharmaceutical products valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure represented 17.4% of British export trade in that period.

"This deal secures employment, increases capital expenditure and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a global hub for biotech and pharma," a government official commented.

Key British Pledges

The deal involves several key changes from the United Kingdom:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the price threshold at which it judges new therapies to be too expensive by twenty-five percent.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a goal to double total NHS spending on medicines from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The sum drug companies must return to the NHS to stay within budget will be restricted at fifteen percent. Previously, repayments topped 20%.

Industry Background

The deal follows a ongoing row between the sector and the British authorities over drug pricing and regulatory access.

These tensions were intensified by claims that American customers were paying significantly more for the identical medicines than people in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several major pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or cancelled, while major funding commitments have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS had to increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a proportion of its resources over the previous ten-year period.
